Day 15 - Grindelwald Männlichen

2025 Switzerland day 15

Sleep location
Grindelwald

Travel Log

We took the cable car up to Männlichen this morning. Jasper and Nick walked the Royal Walk to the viewpoint while the girls stayed in the playground. Even at 10am it was hot, hot, hot. Before melting into the grass we started the walk to Kleine Scheidegg. The walk was ok, but it was hot, and the girls weren’t loving the heat.

One win though was the Restaurant Grindelwaldblick which for a sensible price had the best ice creams of the whole trip (in Nick’s opinion). Two scoops all round for the kids and Nick had an affogato and Alex an ice coffee.

We timed the train at Kleine Scheidegg well but unfortunately due to a mistake on our part this wasn’t covered by the Bernese Oberland pass so we got stung for 58CHF for the pleasure of the 30 minute ride 😡.

All in all a grumpy day because it was so hot, Grindelwald is so expensive, and it’s just not very authenticate with all the tourist hordes.

Tomorrow the plan is to get out earlier for a short walk and then spend the lions share of the day at the outdoor pool in Grindelwald. The forecast tomorrow is 31 degrees in Grindelwald! 🥵

A few moments to reflect on Grindelwald (and Lauterbrunnen: the scenery is nice, but it’s so touristy that I don’t think I’d come back. There are just bus load after bus load of tourists and as a town Grindelwald is really spread out and quite confusing with its three train stations and not very walkable at all. Also, because the mountain access is a combination of cable cars and trains it’s much more confusing, especially when not all lifts are covered by the pass. The trains are also much slower than gondolas. Zermatt was walkable and charming. Adelboden was authentic and friendly. Chamonix was accessible and with epic views.
