Travel Log

To avoid either the long walk or the tedious bus we decided to drive to Grindelwald Terminal instead today, and what a good decision that was. Not only was there plenty of parking, it also had a Coop (fresh bread and croissants) and a bunch of other shops. Worth the 15CHF easily.

We were a little early so got on the Eiger Express and luckily instead of having to hang around at Eigergletscher one of the helpful attendants said we could get on the earlier train - half an hour ahead of schedule already and it wasn’t even 9:30am! There was a brief stop at Eismeer to see some glaciers and then we were soon at the top. It actually wasn’t too busy so we got a coffee or three and sat down in the cafe. The hot chocolate that Bess had was stacked so high with whipped cream it was in danger of toppling.

The walk through the ice cave and past the giant snow globe was lovely and we went up to the observatory view point. Afterwards we headed down onto the glacier where we paid for the family to go snow tubing and sledding for half an hour - actually was amazing fun and pretty good value all in all. Nick did manage to crash into Thea on the first run though and his knee connected with Thea’s eye to give her a black eye 😬. Bess had her own harrowing tale too when she shared a sledge with Nick and Nick’s feet splashed a bit of snow on her legs! The horror!

After the snow fun, we walked out further on the glacier, made a snow man (with raisin eyes and Haribo / Cheeto nose) and had a bit of a picnic. It was hard to walk on the snow and we could not have walked to the Mönchsjochhütte in these conditions.

We watched the folks doing the zip line and what looked like crash landings. One guy also lost both shoes as he hit the snow!

Bess was feeling the effects of the altitude so decided to see if we could go down early and by luck there was space on the train leaving in 2 minutes. After a sprint to the doors, including Alex falling up the stairs, we collapsed in the corridor with relief.

Back in Grindelwald Terminal we picked up some more food, and chocolate from the Lindt shop. It was nice to be home at a reasonable hour (4pm) and not totally exhausted and overheated! On the downside though somewhere along the way Nick lost his hat 😢.
