Day 4 - Ouray

Another early start with everyone up well before 6am! After bacon and eggs for breakfast and making our bagel sandwiches for lunch we headed to Ouray for our jeep tour with Alpine Scenic Tours, up into Yankee Boy Basin. The scenery was epic, and the jeep was loads of fun. The seats were suprisingly comfortable which helped with the very bumpy track.
We saw some deer, marmots and lots of wildflowers. Sadly no bears. A humming bird flew between our heads at one point. There were also the relics of old mining activity - crumbling wood structures and half standing metal sheds.
Yankee Boy Basin itself was incredible. We walked to a waterfall, took in the 360 degree views, and soaked in the silence. The tour continued up into another basin, Governor Basin. This was just over 3600m and another one of incredible views, even if there was the mining paraphernalia still around. We even found a patch of snow to play in!
On the drive down it started to rain, but this was actually quite pleasant and soon stopped in any case and as we came back down to the elevation of Ouray (2350m) it was warm and dry again.
We spent the afternoon at Ouray Hot Springs. This was perfect for the kids because it had pools of various temperatures and lots of activities from water slides, to inflatable obstacles courses, to deep water solo rock climbing.
On the way back to our Airbnb we picked up a takeaway pizza (or five!) at Colorado Boy Pub & Brewery and relaxed on the balcony with some cider we’d picked up at the farm shop on our first day.
Another great day in Colorado.
